Magical Munchies For Muggles – Harry Potter Themed Blog Pt.2

So who can remember what all these spells do?

I was able to pronounce them perfectly, and found myself trying to sound like how everyone on the movie would say them….

You do remember I admitted to being a Harry Potter nerd right?  I seem to be the only one I have found, as an adult, that is willing to admit to my complete nerdy HP ways.  I am okay with my nerdy ways…..

Soooooo…today I share with you the delicious…or most avoided treat on Harry Potter…Besides the dinner that was served for Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday Party….

Hagrid always had tea and rock cakes when Harry, Ron, and Hermione would visit his cabin.  BUT the treat could break your teeth they were so hard….

These did not break my teeth….and were quite delicious, packed full of orange flavor.

Rock Cake Recipe – recipe from harrypotterrecipes

2 cups self-rising flour, or plain flour sifted with 2 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt (optional)
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup fine granulated sugar
1 cup mixed dried fruit (such as a mixture of moist packs of dried apricots, raisins and cranberries)
Finely grated rind of small orange
1 egg, beaten
3 Tbsp milk
Juice of 1/2 small orange

Preheat oven to 425 ºF.
Lightly grease baking tray.
Sift flour and salt together.
Using pastry blender, cut margarine or butter into the flour.
Add sugar, dried fruit and orange rind.
Stir in egg.
Add milk and just enough juice to make a stiff, sticky consistency that will stand in peaks when stirred with a knife.
Put walnut-sized heaps of mixture on baking tray.
Allow them to keep a rough, rocky shape.
Do not flatten or smooth them.
Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes or until golden and firm.
Cool completely on rack for flavor to develop.

Everyone seems more intrigued with butterbeer, there is a lot of recipes shared with the ingredients.  Whereas, I have always been curious about pumpkin juice.  So I tried it, and totally would make this for a daily smoothie, with adjustments as always.

Pumpkin Juice Recipe – recipe from HarryPotterRecipes

2 cups of pumpkin, chopped up into chunks
2 cups of apple juice
1/2 cup of pineapple juice
1 teaspoon of honey (to taste)
Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg and/or Allspice (all ground, to taste)

Juice the pumpkin pieces by squeezing through a cheesecloth or by using a juicer. Pour the pumpkin juice, apple juice and pineapple juice into a blender. Add the honey and spices, adjusting quantity to taste. Chill or serve over ice.

Note-I had leftovers from my pumpkin pastie ingredients.  So I took that pumpkin, and pureed it with the apple juice, and pineapple juice, and a small amount of honey.  The pastie ingredients had all the spices in it, and some milk, so was perfect to use.

I have had fun reading on TasteSpotting all the different HP recipes. Thank you to TasteSpotting for accepting my Pumpkin Pastie picture!

AND of course I have had fun making the treats I have always been curious about.  I hope you enjoyed!

Here are some questions that were asked to me, to try to stump me:

What is the name of the liquid drunk to change one’s physical appearance into another person’s appearance? Answer-Polyjuice Potion

Why is it bad to say Lord Voldemort’s name? Answer -Because it had a Taboo on it…anyone who was brave enough (like Professor Dumbledore or Harry) would say it.  Otherwise, everyone would say “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”.

What house did the sorting hat first want to sort Harry to? Answer- Well actually in Book 6 or 7, he asked the sorting hat that question, the hat said he was always going to put him in Gryffindor, but knew he could do great things in Slytherin….(I hope I answered that right, LOL!)

How many hidden ways are there in and out of Hogwarts? Answer – 7 are on Marauders Map (but several actually exist.)

Who can see Thestralls? Answer – people who have seen someone die.

Thank you so much Allison from The French Whisk!  She asked these questions, and I so excited to meet another Harry Potter fan!!  By the way, she has a beautiful blog, and just made the most recent French Friday’s with Dorie recipe, Melon Soup, YUM!

What is your favorite Harry Potter Recipe you were always curious about?

Until next time, Come on in, Have a seat,

Hugs, Terra

I didn't even know there WERE Harry Potter recipes!! And I've read all the books and seen the movies too. Have you seen the latest one? I haven't wanted to hit the crowds yet...maybe this week. And I laughed one of the comments confessing to being 26. I'm waaaaaaay older than that. It takes grown up muggles to understand all the nuances.

I for one LOVE Harry Potter! I thought the last movie was fantastic! It's so funny that you have published a recipe for rock cakes because I'd never heard of them until last week when my British coworker was going on and on about them. I'm going to have to try some (though maybe not the teeth-breaking kind).
    • I am sooooo excited to find so many HP nerds!!! YAY!!! The rock cakes are quite delicious, and safe for the teeth I promise:-)  The last movie was amazing!!! I love hearing about your friend who loves rock cakes, I was wondering if they are really enjoyed by people:-) Hugs, Terra
