Homemade Mounds Bars (+ Your Favorite Recipes of 2013!)

Okay, seriously, where did the year go?  This year was eventful, busy, and full of food love!  Today, I decided to leave you with one last recipe to finalize 2013 in style!  Last week I shared my Mom’s Homemade Chocolate Fudge.  It was hard to choose which recipe to share from the many cookie recipes my Mom made this year.  Then I went home to Michigan for an unexpected trip, and the recipes were decided.  While my Niece, Dad, and I were out playing in the snow,  my Mom stayed in and made some fudge, and her version of a candy bar favorite.

Homemade Mounds BarsMy Mom couldn’t remember where she got the delicious recipe.  It is one of those recipes that has been around for a very long time.  This is actually one of my Sister’s favorite holiday recipes.  If you love coconut, and you love Mounds Bars candy bar….well then you may want to double this recipe!

Ingredients

For Crust:
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted
For Coconut Filling:
2 cups Coconut
1 can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk
For Chocolate:
4 Hershey bars
6 oz. bag chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

For Crust: In small bowl, mix together graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar, and melted butter. Spread out crust mixture in 9 x 13 pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Let cool.

For Coconut Layer: In small bowl, mix together coconut and milk. Spread over cooled crust. Bake coconut and crust mixture for 10 minutes. Let cool.

For Chocolate Layer: Melt chocolate bars and chocolate chips together in double boiler, or in microwave. For double boiler - have stove top on medium heat, for bottom pan add small amount of water, place second pan over bottom pan to create double boiler, continually stir chocolate to prevent burning while melting the chocolate, pour melted chocolate over cooled coconut mixture.

Let chocolate set, then enjoy!

My Niece and I sledding in Michigan!  Three generations have used that sled- I used it as a child, and my Mom used it when she was a kid- now my Sweet Niece!

    I have never been sledding. Just no snow in my part of the world. I would love to have that experience - it looks thrilling and definitely something story-books are made of.
